In 1879, Tombstone had 40 cabins and 100 people, and lots on Allen Street sold for $5. June 20, 1880 there were 3,000 people in the town and late 1881 there was over 7,000 people in town and more gambling houses, saloons, and a larger graveyard and red light district than any town in the southwest. Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth in Warren County in western Illinois on March 19 1848 to widower Nicholas Porter Earp and Virginia Ann Cooksey. From his father s first marriage Wyatt had an elder half-brother Newton and a half-sister Mariah Ann who died at the age of ten months. Wyatt was named after his father s commanding officer in the Mexican-American Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp (March 19, 1848 January 13, 1929) was an American farmer, teamster, sometime buffalo hunter, officer of the law in various Western frontier towns, gambler, saloon-keeper, miner and boxing referee. He is best known for his participation in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, along with Doc Holliday, and two of his brothers, Virgil Earp and Morgan Earp. Wyatt Earp never forgot the fact that Doc Holliday saved his life twice that night in Dodge City. * The events of Earp's and Holliday's stay in Tombstone, including the OK Corral fight are depicted in many novels, including "Who Rides With Wyatt" Will Henry, "Bloody Season" Loren D. Estleman, "Wyatt Earp" Matt Braun, "Trouble in Tombstone" Richard Wheeler, and "Gunman's Rhapsody" Robert B. Parker. Virgil, ever the calm city peace officer, told Ike he'd leave Ike's confiscated rifle and revolver at the Grand Hotel (a favorite of the Cowboys when in town) and he did so. There Ike's weapons stayed through the gunfight which followed. Some evidence supports Wyatt Earp's birthplace as 406 South 3rd Street in Monmouth, Illinois, though the street address is disputed Buntline Special Myth Certain myths have grown up around Wyatt's time as a Dodge City lawman. One is the story of the special-order Colt "Peacemaker" revolvers with extra-long barrels presented in 1876 to Earp, Masterson, and three other Dodge City personalities the flamboyant "Ned Buntline" (Edward Judson), a wealthy writer of dime novels who lived in Stamford, New York. The Earp brothers staked mining claims and rights to water in Tombstone. Wyatt's brother Jim worked as a barman. The three Earp brothers, along with Robert J. Winders, filed a claim on the First North Extension of the Mountain Maid Mine on December the 6th Tombstone is perhaps the most historic town in a state that's absolutely filled with them.
